What is Judaica ?
This guide, which is intended not only for art historians, ethnologists and antiquaries but also for the general public, provides an overview of Judaica - a term that refers to Jewish ritual objects used in the synagogue and the home, and to other objects associated with the life of the Jewish community, societies, guilds and individual persons. The main part of this dictionary comprises 149 entries with linked references, brief chapters on the characteristics of the symbols that occur on both ritual objects and tombstones, a grouping together of related entries to facilitate contextualization, a calendar of Jewish holidays, a glossary of terms that appear in the text, and an index. In addition, there are over 200 illustrations based on original three-dimensional objects in the collections of the Jewish Museum in Prague.
What is a Seder bowl? What is the purpose of a spice box? How many lights are lit on the Hanukkah candelabrum? What is the purpose of the synagogue curtain? How is the crown used? What does a Jewish bride wear on her head on her wedding day? What clothes are worn in the coffin?
This dictionary has the answers to these and many more questions.
