Sewing Machine Needles

The choice of a needle depends on the type of thread and fabric. Avoid problems during sewing by using a needle that has the right shape and size. Do not use dull needles, otherwise you can damage your fabric. Change it before you start a new project. Insert the needle all the way into the needle clamp with the flat part of the shank away from you.

Types of needles:

Universal needle – (univerzálna ihla)

Topstitch needle – (ihla na štepovanie) has a very large eye and a larger groove

Embroidery needle – (vyšívacia ihla) has a slightly rounded point and a larger eye

Denim needle – (jeansová/ denimová ihla) has a sharp point to penetrate tightly woven materials

Stretch needle – (strečová ihla) suitable for elastic fabrics

Microtex needle – (mikrotexová ihla; ihla pre mikrofázu a hodváb) has a sharp point like denim needle, however, it is smaller. It is used for tightly woven fabrics of a light weight .

Quilting needle – (ihla na patchwork)

Threads

In order to prevent thread breakage, knots and irregular stitches, choose a good quality thread. The weight of thread is represented by number; the higher the number, the thinner the thread.

Regular sewing threads

·Cotton thread (bavlnená niť) – for cotton and wool fabrics

·Polyester thread (polyesterová niť) – for all kinds of fabrics; it cannot be dyed

·Sewing silk (hodvábna niť) – thin, lightweight thread for silk fabrics

Heavier weight threads

·Buttonhole thread (dierková niť) – for handstitched buttonholes as well as sewing buttons on by hand

·Topstitching thread (niť na /dekoratívne/ štepovanie) –  a strong thread used for decorative topstitching

Other threads

·Invisible thread (priesvitná, monofilová niť) – a transparent thread used for quilting or when stitching should not be visible

·Embroidery thread (vyšívacia niť) – rayon thread with sheen used for embroideries or decorative stitches

·Metallic thread (efektná priadza, kovová, metalizovaná) – a shiny decorative thread

·Basting thread (stehovka) – thin and soft cotton thread used for basting (temporary seams)

·Bobbin thread – a very soft and fine thread used in bobbin during making decorative stitches while embroidery thread is on the top
